Gotthard Pass, the second pass in the Alps, opened last week, and there’s still plenty of snow! It’s a 10 km climb from Andermatt, and riders can choose to ride on the charming old cobblestone road and descend on the famous Tremola with its 24 switchbacks (see the 3rd photo on the left). Right now, the old road is still covered in snow, but it will be cleared before the first riders arrive in the Swiss mountains.

Nice at the Côte d’Azur is checkpoint and finish point at route km 5370. This year Nice is also the final finish at the Tour de France, the biggest yearly sport event on the world. The first time ever, that the tour will not finish in Paris. On this occasion Nice changed this year our finish monument.

Nice is also checkpoint and finish point of the 45-SouthWest bicycle adventure. The NorthCape-Tarifa and the 45-SouthWest routes cross each other at the checkpoint Nice. Otherwise 45-SouthWest is a very different route.

Registration for the 2025 edition of the #45southwest will open begin of August.

The route check for 2024 is finished and the route files from the start at the NorthCape to Tarifa ready. The roads of the “Giants” how they call the high mountain passes in Briancon France, are still covered with snow.

So also Pico del Veleta, with 3400m the highest route point at km 7000. Some impression from Pico del Veleta where the road is still under 2m of snow from this weekend.

2018 finished Steffen Streich in 21 days and 57 minutes the 7400km long NorthCape-Tarifa route. Unbeaten until today. He said: “Never again such a long race and never 2 times the same race”. 6 years later Steffen will be back at the start of the NorthCape-Tarifa adventure. Five months until the start of the 2024 NorthCape-Tarifa.

Currently, the mountain passes in the Alps are blanketed with meters of snow.

The photos were taken yesterday at -10 degrees Celsius at Col du Lautaret, featuring the refuge Napoleon and the view towards the mighty Col du Galbier. The third photo captures La Grave, located 12km down from Col du Lautaret, a resting point for riders in previous editions.
